Clearly the most extensive effort to a comprehensive ebook online library is currently being undertaken by google. Google has said that they are scanning more than 3,000 ebooks per day, a rate that translates into more than 1 million ebooks annually. The entire ebook project may exceed US$100 million in costs. On October 28, 2008 Google stated that they have 7 million ebooks searchable through Google Book Search, including those ebooks scanned by their 20,000 ebook publisher partners. Of the 7 million ebooks, 1 million are "full preview ebooks" based on agreements with publishers. 1 million ebooks are in the public domain, and the remaining 5 million are no longer in print or commercially available and therefore available for free. October 2008: A settlement is reached between the publishing industry and Google after two years of negotiation. Google agrees to compensate authors and publishers in exchange for the right to make millions of books available to the public
